Farewell Facebook

I always was a late bloomer. I just found my way onto Facebook about 8 months ago. I was the last person I knew who wasn't on it. I promptly got sucked in to the farming - because who doesn't want to dream of crops in the Winter - and then found that hours were being siphoned away into a black hole of reading posts and accepting friend requests from people who had been horrible to me in high school.

I do like keeping up to date with my long-distance friends, and with my favourite authors and bloggers, but I've decided I can do that just as easily by taking that hour of Facebook time a day and translating that into reading their websites and blogs. And keeping up with my own, which has been difficult to do of late.

I don't want to give up the blogging (or reading and enjoying everyone else's blogs) but something has to give. And with all the privacy issues on Facebook, it was an easy choice.

Farewell Facebook - and good riddance!

Good for you! I too resisted Facebook for a long time, and was more or less forced into it by my family if I wanted to see family photos. But I never strike up conversations, and actually prefer reading blogs.

You've given me that extra push to drop FB too. I guess if my kids want me to see photos of the grandkids that badly, they can e-mail them to me like they used to do! lol

Thanks!!

I am a very late bloomer when it comes to FB. I still haven't really figured it out. And sure don't understand all of the addiction to it.

Well I am a "hooked" on FV person. But then, I am retired and have the time. I don't converse, as it were, on FB. However, I do keep up with the grandkids and the latest pictures. Sigh....

I keep up with the blogs I follow and publish my blog and love it!

Have a great day! :)

I'm another one who is giving up on Facebook. a year ago, I was basically forced into by family "If you want to see my pictures or talk me ..." Got addicted to playing all these stupid games and found I was spending hours on it every day. Since the beginning of May, I quit playing all the games and only allow myself one visit a day for just 15 minutes. I won't quit entirely because of the family and some high school friends that are on there but I'm not having my life ruled by a computer program anymore! :-)

I give it up every summer but struggle because most of my homeschooly friends are on it and of course having 4 adult children I get to see them this way but really I love handwritten letters much more and I think people enjoy getting them . I look at my gramma's old photos and how precious they are because there may be only 10 of her old homestead or 5 of my mum as a child only 3 of my grandfather and how wonderful they are .
As someone who deals with abuse etc. all the time I know we can only go so far to protect ourselves if someone wishes to stalk us , abuse our children we can only to so much we can't control everything predators choose to do only our own actins .
we go onto library computer after june 15th until sept. long weekeknd . I love it , more time out at the fire , in the garden at Gramma's place etc.
I think it was 3 yrs ago all my plants were dying in my fairy garden on fb . I have many friends with elborate gardens etc. then it dawned on me , why would I spend literally hrs tending to an imaginary garden when I love the one I have right here . Same with friends , community etc. So computer community etc. only after the real thing here is loved & cared for . I no longer have farm , fairy garden or do quizzes etc. on fb I use it only to do pictures , update how we are and see our children's info That is it . I spend maybe 10 min on it at the most . However like I said for summer months we cancel computer & tv .

You lasted 6 months longer on Facebook than I did, LOL! You're right, what a colossal waste of time FB is.

I hear you! I joined FB two years ago and immediately got sucked into the vortex of applications, games and sending "gifts.

Fortunately, the novelty wore off and I now only use it to keep up with family and friends and look at their photos. I blocked Farmville. And all other applications that annoy me. :)

I block just about every single application which comes my way. :)

But I do love keeping up with old friends. And for that reason, I keep it active.

I want to forget FB but I have so much family and old friends on there that I cannot let go :)

I have a FB account but I've been known to go a month without logging on. I do like it to keep in touch with people and if I have a question I know I'll get a quick answer ;)

Good for you, Rue, kicking the habit!

Yippee... so good to hear someone say that. I relunctantly set up a facebook page for connection with family. Mostly family that I have never met. I like you am at a point where I want to say good riddens with it all. And I only got on it a month ago.. so you weren't the last one on... :-)

I don't have Facebook...never did and never will. When a co-worker called me to the office and showed me a message my office mate had written to a family member about calling in sick and going down south, that did it for me. Nothing is private.

Wow, what a timely post! I guess I'm just not there yet, for some reason I just can't give the thing up. I actually "unfriended" all of the people I don't really talk with anymore, and now it serves primarily as a way to stay connected with the local organizations I care about. Kind of lame, but its my personal local news channel for my causes. I have a feeling it won't be too long until I say goodbye and good riddance too though...

Congratulations!

I'm like Bridgett, blocking all applications - never had patience for these games, farmville and stuff. But I do keep it active, love reading friends' posts and posting my own quick notes. But my main thing is on my blog!

Kisses!

Rue, I have never set up an account with Facebook, and -- lo and behold -- I am still alive and kicking! ;) I simply don't want another social feature which is time-consuming. Besides, there are plenty of people I don't feel like contacting again... LOL!

Here's to new friends like you!!! :)

Hugs,
Birgit
