Looking Up in August - Celestial Giveaway!

I am usually hiding indoors and wimpering in defeat by the first week of August.  Normal temperatures in the Valley this time of year hover around 40 degrees Celsius (which is just over 100 degrees F.)  This year however, with it's lower than normal temperatures see us sitting at about 32 (89F) which is much more bearable and allows for more time outdoors in the garden.  Which translates to much less time in front of a computer.

Although my blogging has taken a hit, my spirit has a glow on.  Time in the garden, walking by the river, discovering local plants I hadn't noticed before and time under the stars have all proven to be very healing and have allowed me to keep up a fairly good attitude, even during the hottest part of the year when I'm normally wilting.

The part of August I always look forward to though (even during the super-hot years) are the Perseids.  The yearly meteor shower that shows off from the beginning of August, peaking around the 13th, is always a high point of my Summer.  Althoug the Geminids boast more metors, their December show is much more chilly!  This time of year is more conducive to laying in the grass and staring at the sky, and at about 60 meteors an hour you are are almost sure to see one, even if you only step out for a few minutes.

This year, your best bet is to try to see the Perseids earlier in the month.  By the time the shower peaks, the full moon will block out much of the show.  See if you can spot some shooting stars while the moon is waxing and the sky is dark.

In honour of the Perseids, this month's giveaway is the Celestial Tarot.  This deck "explores the mythological archetypes and astrological imagery that have inspired mankind since ancient times."  Take a look at this lovely deck:

As always, all you have to do is be a stalker in some form or fashion - follow the blog, find me on Facebook, subscribe to the RSS feed, or track me down on Twitter (links for all in the sidebar.)  Then, leave a comment (make sure I can track you down if you win) and that's it!

I will draw for this deck (with booklet & spreadsheet) at the peak of the Perseids show - August 13th!  Good luck!

Hi Jen! I'd love to win that Celestial tarot deck. I can promise that I'll give it a good home next to my runes on my altar. Anyhow- thanks for the opportunity and try and stay cool in that Valley heat! I'll try and send you some cool thoughts from my foggy City by the Bay up here! =0)

I can only recall seeing Perseids once while on a work camp out with local youth years ago. It was amazing we didn't sleep at all that night. The tarot deck is beautiful.

We love the Perseids; every summer since my kids were very little, we would have a night or two watching for the showers. Usually though driven back inside by mosquitoes! You are hosting another great giveaway! I am a loyal follower! Enjoy your August! Hugs.

I've been hiding indoors most of the time since mid-July. Between temps well over 100F (108 yesterday!) and the plague of mosquitoes unlike any I've seen before, it's been pretty miserable trying to be outside. I'm hoping the bugs and heat will break soon!

Let me tell you, this Florida place is flipping HOT. I can relate to wilting. Yesterday the heat index here was 110. YUK, I went outside once and thought I was going to pass out.
The meteor showers sound beautiful :) And beautiful tarot deck!

Lovely to see another BC girl enjoying our cooler than normal summers. I've been trying to catch a glimpse of the shower for a few nights now, but I think the light pollution is killing my chances. I'll keep looking though!

Oh, what a lovely deck! I'd love to win that. I follow via RSS.

The first time I saw the Perseids was quite by accident- we went camping, and after setting up, (we got there after dark) I was tired and threw myself down on my back on the picnic table, and saw a shooting star. Then another one... then another.... I laid for for quite a long time, watching!

So hope it won't be an overcast as usual here in London, I really really want to see them this year properly!

Nothing like sky candy to brighten up the spirits :)

And that tarot deck is gorgeous, it's actually the first time I read about it so thanks for that, I'm going to look up some more information on it!

I'm not entering into your delightful drawing because I won last month, but wanted to chime in. .we love watching the meteor showers, too!

When my older daughter was first married, she lived in an area that had a very dark sky, and few tall trees. .her new hubby thought that we were all nuts. .my hubs, daughter and I were all out there in outdoor lounge chairs, tilted back watching the open expanse of sky. .we brought drinks, sweatshirts and light blankets for when the dew started to form. .he kept coming out, looking at the sky, looking rather dubious at us, then going back into the house. .after a hour or so of him traipsing back and forth, he finally comes out with his own lawn chair, and settled in for a beautiful light show! He was hooked! lol

I totally understand the heat. Here in NC, we've been topping 100-115 for a few weeks now and the humidity is HORRIBLE! Stay cool and thanks for letting us know about the shower!
