I'm feeling a bit nostalgic today, after spending the day celebrating my grandfather's 98th birthday. I visited with family I hadn't seen in years and saw pictures of cousins' children, now grown. I laughed with an uncle who took me to my first movie at a movie theatre 25 years ago - "Back to the Future."
After my trip down memory lane, I thought this look at a vintage farmers market was apt.

I didn't know that farmers' markets originated in California in the 1960s! Makes sense though.

Anyways! It was pretty nifty to see something from the '50s or so about Farmers Markets. Their strawberries didn't quite look like strawberries though. I'm always at work when the local ones are happening. >.>
The farmers markets here in Southern California used to be legendary, sigh. Luckily there has been a large resurgence of them here in the valleys, the only problem is a lot of them don't actually have any produce. But they're working on it!
I'm hearing more of Farmer's Markets lately. We are finally beginning to realize everything of the post shouldn't be discarded.
Your grandfather has seen alot of change and I'll be he has good stories to tell.

When I was a kid in the '60s, we would go to the LA market occasionally. At that time, it was one of the few places my mother could find mangoes!
I still have a gold wire bracelet with my name made in wire that they bought me there. The artist made the names right on the spot.

It's sad. I've been blogging for three years and have managed to avoid the spam-holes out there, but I guess they hit everyone eventually.

This reminds me SO much of the Farmer's Market where I live here in Michigan, back in the 50's. I was grade school age, and went with my parents at least once a week. My Mom usually bought all that she canned or preserved direct from the farms around, but she bought our daily fresh fruit and veggies at the market (and for me, it was a lot more fun that standing in a hot orchard or field and picking!)
With the increased interest in buying local, a farmer's market has sprung up again, but it is a very slim shadow of its former self. BUT, it is better than nothing, and hopefully, it will continue to grow!

wow 98 thats amazing :) happy birthday!! how great that the market has been going soooo long its good to look back every now and then and see how things have changed or not.
